A scientific project titled "Development of a Dendrarium for Educational and Experimental Purposes" was developed and implemented by specialists from the University Botanical Gardens and the Faculty of Biology, under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rosen Tsonev from the Faculty of Biology at Sofia University in 2017.
The dendrarium is located in the "Educational and Experimental Base" of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski," Sofia. It was established in 2014 with financial support from the Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW) and spans an area of 7,215 square meters. It represents a permanent exhibition of ornamental groups of coniferous and broad-leaved trees and shrubs.
The main objectives of the project are related to creating conditions for the optimal development of plant collections in an urban environment; enriching these collections with new species; and advancing scientific and educational activities related to the cultivation and propagation of plants under controlled conditions.
The project’s objectives were achieved through the following activities: detailed inventory of the plant species on the site, preparation of a dendrological map containing the exact location of the plants, creation of a database for each species, planting new plant species that complement the already existing collections and initiate new ones, propagation of plants from rare and interesting varieties to enrich species diversity, and the construction of an irrigation system.
The project was approved and funded by the Scientific Research Fund of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski."
