60 YEARS BOTANIC GARDEN BALCHIK
The celebrations of the anniversary of University Botanic Garden - Balchik are held under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rosen Plevneliev
University Botanic Garden Balchik celebrated its 60th anniversary in the company of representatives of the academic community of the Sofia University, as well as guests from other universities in the country, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the municipal and district administration, museums, community centers and other organizations, many friends.
On 27 July 2015, the Botanic Garden opened its doors to the fans of the plant kingdom. A number of events were held throughout the day. The day’s program was opened by the Head of the University Botanic Garden – Balchik, Mrs. Valya Mashkarova. The celebration began with performances of various local folk ensembles. The master thesis defense of graduate students from the Environmental Management specialty of the Balkan Environmental Center to University Botanic Garden Balchik and the Biology faculty of the Sofia University “St Kliment Ohridski” was held outdoors for the first time ever. Poster presentations accompanied by lectures prepared by students from the Biology faculty and the Student Club for Education and Development with Environmental Center „S.K.O.R.E.C.“ were held in the most picturesque corners of the garden. The botanical workshop for children and the exhibition of cacti and succulents from the collection of the Botanic Garden garnered exceptional interest.
A highlight of the day was the academic celebration. Flowers and wreaths were placed in front of the commemorative plaque of the founder of the Botanical Garden academician Daki Yordanov were placed by the corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Prof. PhD. Ivan Ilchev - on behalf of the academic board of Sofia University “St Kliment Ohridski”, Prof. Dobrina Temniskova - from the Bulgarian Botanical Society, rear admiral Mitko Petev on behalf of the Bulgarian Navy and Dr Krasimir Kosev on behalf of University Botanic Gardens. Under the sounds of „Gaudeamus Igitur” the academic board and the guests proceeded to the „Divine Garden”, where academic speeches and congratulatory addresses were read. On the occasion of the anniversary, for their hard work for the maintenance and development of the Botanical Garden and its unique collection of cacti, the botanists received congratulations from the minister for education Prof. PhD (Ped) T. Tanev, Prof. Dr Mariela Odzhakova, PhD – Dean of the Faculty of Biology, rear admiral Mitko Petev, Commander of the Bulgarian Navy, from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the Agricultural University, the Forestry Institute, the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research and many others. The representative band of the Bulgarian Navy with conductor Lieutenant Commander Miroslav Trifonov gave a bravura performance of classical pieces by Bulgarian and world composers. The celebration concluded with fireworks display and in excellent spirits.
